A backflow prevention assembly is a device used to protect the water supply of a home or building from contamination or pollution.  In water supply systems, water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow properly. When pressure decreases due to for example water main bursts, pipe freezing, or high demand on the water system, the pressure in the pipe may be reduced and allow contaminated water to enter the system. To prevent this, regulatory regimes require a backflow prevention assembly between the delivery point of the water main and local storage or use. Where submerged mains inflow is permitted, a backflow prevention assembly is also required. A typical backflow assembly has test cocks and shut-off valves and must be tested once a year or when relocated, repaired or installed.  There are over 10,000 reported cases of backflow contamination each year due to the lack of a backflow prevention device.
